World War I: The Origin
World War I was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. Why was it caused? Does everybody know its origin? This war involved the world’s most powerful countries, which were separated in two different alliances: The Allies and The Central Powers. It caused the dead of thousands of people and economic and social instability in the whole world. The first total war in the recent history was caused by several factors that occurred in the 20th century’s beginnings, mainly because of the raise in nationalism and militarism in the world’s most powerful countries, the intern problematic in a region called The Balkans and the assassination of an important royal.
Militarism means that the army and military forces are given a high profile by the government. The growing European divide had led to an arms race between the main countries. The armies of both France and Germany had more than doubled between 1870 and 1914 and there was fierce competition between Britain and Germany for mastery of the seas. Nationalism means being a strong supporter of the rights and interests of one’s country. That created a lot more competition a tention between the countries.
In the Balkans, there was a conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, the two states involved in the original Sarajevo crisis. There were also the known Balkan Wars, which were two conflicts that took place in the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe.By the early 20th century, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia formed the Balkan League. The first war broke out when the League attacked the Ottoman Empire on October of 1912 and was ended seven months later by the Treaty of London. The secon Balkan War broke out on June of 1913. Bulgaria was dissatisfied over the division of the spoils inMacedonia, made in secret by its former allies, Serbia and Greece, and attacked them. The Serbian and Greek armies repulsed the Bulgarian offensive and counter-attacked into Bulgaria, while Romania and the Ottoman Empire also attacked Bulgaria and gained territory. These crisis and wars created a lot oi f inestability in Europe and created the fights for territory.
The cause that lead directly to the war was the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.on june of 1914,he and his wife, Sophie, were shot dead in Sarajevo, by one of a group of six Bosnian Serb assassins called “The Black Hand”. The political objective of the assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary’s south-Slav provinces so they could be combined into a Greater Serbia or a Yugoslavia. The assassins’ motives were consistent with the movement that later became known as “Young Bosnia”. The attack led to the outbreak of World War I one month later.
The causes explained before lead to one terrible result: World War I. This war caused millions of deads and inestability all over the world. Knowing better some of the causes and background of this huge conflict would make people understand more the reasons formaking it and their impact in our world’s history.
